IFS Direct Access + Gifts of Burdens - 3 day Workshop - Melbourne | Abbotsford Convent | Friday, 28. February 2020

In this three-day didactic & experiential Internal Family System workshop we will learn key skills for working with the vulnerable as well as protective aspects of our self-caring systems for healing and growth. On the first two days US-based IFS trainer Paul Neustadt will teach how-to work with entrenched or difficult parts using the powerful Direct Access technique, and the final day will address the unseen and under-appreciated gifts of Exiles.

Direct Access: an essential skill of IFS (first 2 days) With all those clients who don't seem ready or able to focus inside on parts, we need to use Direct Access. Those times when you can feel you have to "abandon the model" and do what you used to do, that is when you can do Direct Access. While it can look like an IFS-informed 'talk-therapy' it offers a powerful and direct way to lend the Self energy of the therapist to support vulnerable client systems safely. Direct Access is often introduced as the alternative to Insight work ("...ask the part if it would...").

For many people Direct Access is the missing piece in their IFS repertoire.

Direct Access is in many ways more challenging than guiding people to work with their parts. This workshop will provide opportunities for participants to practice safely using a series of proven teaching exercises, and deepen their understanding of Direct Access through demos and role plays.

The Gifts of Our Exiles: Reconnecting with Our True Self (3rd day) - our protectors tend to see our exiles as dangerous, shameful, too-much or fragile. They are unable to see beyond the exile’s burdens, and even the exiles often think they are their burden. When we help the client and their parts recognize the exile’s gifts, it can ease their resistance to connecting with and healing the exiles.

Paul offers the group a mix of didactic and experiential opportunities to describe the different kinds of gifts exiles give us. Perhaps the most important gift is that, when exiles are unburdened, they enable us to connect with our True Self and the unique qualities and gifts we have to offer the world. Our aliveness, our joy, our passion, and many other qualities are brought back to us when we reintegrate our exiles. Awareness of the exiles’ gifts adds to the power of the healing steps and strengthens the integration of the unburdened exiles.

These three days include case examples and demos to show how we can integrate this work into the IFS healing steps, and dyad exercises that will enable participants to experience this for themselves. Paul will also discuss how the concept of the True Self, which is unique to each individual, fits with the concept of Self and parts. These methods will be demonstrated live with participant volunteers, and supervised practice time is planned for participants to learn by doing.
