Lost Enlightenment: Central Asia's Golden Age from the Arab Conquest to Tamerlane
By S. Frederick Starr, Princeton University Press, 2013.
This is a sweeping history of Central Asia during its medieval ‘age of enlightenment’. The key figures in this period wrote in Arabic but were from Central Asia — drawn from Persianate and Turkic peoples of a region that today extends from Kazakhstan southward through Afghanistan, and from the easternmost province of Iran through Xinjiang, China. From 800–1200 CE Central Asia was one of the leaders of the world in trade and economic development, and in science and the arts.
