The Fly Program is a not-for-profit organisation seeking to raise the awareness and combat the impacts of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and ******* in the Australian ***** male community. Why we are supporting this great cause.
My brother, Pete, and I have worked to transform the hospitality scene in Canberra for over 15 years. During that time, we have worked many, many weeks of 80-100 hours per week, often without balance in our lives and as a consequence we have both dealt with depression and poor physical and mental health. This sort of lifestyle was, and is, considered quite the norm for people in our industry and in most cases leads to suffering of both physical and mental health, particularly in men. With this in mind we set about transforming the culture of hospitality within our venues as a means to transforming our industry. Both of us have spent, and continue to spend, many hundreds of hours immersed in personal development courses to better understand how to make a difference to those around us and also as a means to fulfil our personal concerns. When those around us are winning our personal concerns disappear. Having always loved fishing and the outdoors we both now balance our lives between running the ACT’s most successful hospitality venues and spending plenty of time getting away from the rigours of life by getting back to nature through immersing ourselves into the world of fishing, nature and the great outdoors. We also use this time on the water to gain clarity to develop our businesses and to further distinguish why we do what we do. Ever since having this balance, our physical and mental health has improved and we have thrived in whatever it is we take on. After supporting many charities with seemingly band-aid like solutions, this year we went in search of a charity partner with whom our values aligned. In particular we were looking for a partner focused on dealing with men’s mental health issues, knowing men generally don’t speak up, nor seek help when they are dealing with mental hardship. When I came across Matt Tripet and the Fly Program we immediately made contact and here we are.
Venue: Akiba - 40 Bunda St, Canberra Intention: To raise between $15,000 and $30,000 to donate to the Fly Program and to raise awareness across Canberra for men’s mental health and what Matt, his program, and we, stand for. Ticket cost: $100 per person including full catering from Akiba, Bentspoke and Nick O’Leary wines Special Guest Speakers: Jo and Steve Starling
