Memories Are Made Of This ~ Exhibition Opening | Canberra Contemporary Artspace | Thursday, 05. September 2019

Two years ago I started to make portraits of the couples that attend the Alchemy Chorus; a choir for people living with Dementia and their partners/spouses.When I first met each couple and sing with them, it was difficult to tell which person had Dementia. Visually, this intrigued me. It made me think that even though someone may have dementia, they are still the same person, just different.I have created a series of portraits of each couple, without defining which of the couple has Dementia. I also collected some written stories of many of the couples' lives and oddly enough in those 30+ stories collected, not one mentioned Dementia.I am hoping to raise awareness of this disease but also funding for research into this disease, via @Dementia Australia Along with the couples' portraits I have also made candid images of the choir during their Thursday Morning singing sessions. For families living with this disease, it is so important to make time to do community activities for as long as possible. It is a social outing. Before the death of my father who had Dementia with Lewy Bodies, he loved attending the choir and even towards the end of his life he could still enjoy the singing, even if he looked like he was asleep, we could often see him mouthing the words. He could still remember the words of the old songs, hence the title of this exhibition, Memories Are Made Of This.

The Gallery is open Friday-Sundays 11am - 5pm and the exhibition runs until 15th September.
