  • AN APOLOGY It has been brought to our attention that some of our marketing for The Bedlam Cabaret could have been misconstrued as making fun at the expense of the mentally ill. As a disability led theatre company the thought that we may have offended or caused pain to anyone suffering from a mental illness is quite distressing. The Bedlam Cabaret was first mounted as a fundraiser earlier this year to support our production of Morgan Stern to go to Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Morgan Stern directly dealt with schizophrenia, based on the lived experience of the playwright and her brother and its direction was informed by my own lived experience of bipolar disorder. It was partially set in the infamous Bethlem Asylum for the Insane (aka Bedlam) which is where the initial inspiration for The Bedlam Cabaret came from. It was a catchy title and a fun event, so we decided to continue mounting them. We have amended the marketing copy and hope it is not longer offensive to anyone. We will continue to use the Bedlam as the name, with clarification of the definition a: bed·lam {bedləm} noun “a scene of uproar and confusion” If you have any concerns please get in touch either here or by emailing me at goldele@companyrogues.com -Goldele Rayment (Artistic Director)
