Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

Overview
This two-day training aims to develop a skilled workforce that is better equipped to support people who experience co-occurring metnal health and substance misuse issues. Participants will gain an understanding of the spirit of motivational interviewing.
Learning Outcomes
The training will introduce participants to the four stages of MI, and the core OARS micro-skills (open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries). A range of exercises and video material will be used in this training session.
Presenter biography
Kevan has been at Nexus since 2005, having previously worked in clinical mental health services for over 15 years. He has experience in community and inpatient settings across NSW and Victoria, as well as the UK. Kevan completed a Masters of Social Work at La Trobe University in 2003 and is currently a PhD candidate at Monash University’s Department of Social Work, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science. His research is focused on the Reasons For Use Package. Kevan is on the Executive of the Yarra Drug and Health Forum, an active member of the Yarra Mental Health Alliance and a member of the international body MINT (Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers).
