Communication - AAC | Irabina Autism Services | Thursday, 10. October 2019

Communication – AAC:
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to a variety of strategies and tools such as picture communication boards, key word sign, speech generating devices and objects and gestures that an individual uses to support them to express their needs, wants, thoughts, feelings and ideas. We all use various forms of AAC on a daily basis. For example, when we use gestures and/or facial expressions without speaking, or send an email or text message. Individuals may require AAC to help them communicate all of the time, while others may require AAC to assist them with producing longer sentences or to enhance their comprehension and ability to follow instructions.
This workshop will focus on:

Various types of AAC systems
Principles of AAC and how to implement them within the home and/or community environment
Language development for an individual using or learning to use AAC
Strategies on how to model language using an AAC system
Activity ideas for the home and community environments

This workshop is suitable for parents and professionals supporting an individual using any form of AAC.
