CoVA Grad Academy presents ‘Practising the Arts: skills, strategies and insights’ | Buxton Contemporary – Education Space | Thursday, 29. August 2019

"There's traditionally been a large disconnection in contemporary art between the audience and the artist. Generally audiences are looking towards what they like, and I can tell you, that's the last thing on an artist's mind." - James Turrell
You are invited to a CoVA (Centre of Visual Art) Graduate Academy panel discussion on Thursday 29 August, hosted by Buxton Contemporary.
The internet abounds with websites that tell you anyone with artistic talent can become a professional artist and with a bit of luck, a great success. But what is the reality of being an artist in Australia today?
This panel will explore what it takes to successfully practise the arts. With the insights of artists, curators and gallerists we will examine what professional and personal skills arts practitioners need to further their careers and connect with their audience. The panel will explore questions such as: what are gallerists seeking when the take on new artists? How do art curators choose additions for their exhibitions or collections? What is the value and process of applying for arts prizes and how can you increase your chances of success? What other avenues of funding and support are available in the arts? Where and how can you establish an effective studio practice?   How do you overcome isolation and build an artistic and professional community?
The panellists will provide valuable insights into professional artistic practice and the world of commercial and public galleries, arts prizes and arts practice as well as allied and alternative paths.
Panellists for this event will be painter and 2018 Archibald Prize winner Yvette Coppersmith; artist and Heide Museum Curator Brooke Babbington; and director of the gallery Sarah Scout Presents and founder of Spring 1883 Art Fair Vikki McInnes. Convened by Belinda Scerri.
Registration is essential for this free event.
