Shine a Light
Are our cities designed for after dark?

Melbourne & Sydney—two of the world’s most liveable cities—aren’t equally liveable for everyone. Crowded spaces, unpredictable people, and the risk of assault or harassment can make the urban environment an intimidating—and dangerous—place for some.Yet, because experiences of feeling unsafe or unwelcome often go unreported, they aren’t captured in the data sets city designers and policy makers use when shaping urban environments. How should we incorporate these important but often under-represented voices into our design and decision-making processes?
How do we use evidence based design to inform how we design for inclusive and safe experiences in cities? In 2015 the Free to Be campaign (XYX Lab and Plan International) was released in Melbourne and collected a digital dataset of over 900 pins of safe and unsafe spaces from young women and girls. Over the past 12 months Arup have analysed qualitative with quantitative data across 84 different sites in Melbourne to find practical measures around how we can use lights to make our city feel safer at night time.In this presentation, Arup we will present their findings from a collaborative Arup University research project with XYX Lab (Monash University) and Plan InternationalThis presentation, to be conducted by Hoa Yang and Rebecca Cadorin from Arup, will consider:

How designers can leverage qualitative and quantitative design techniques to inform our understanding of people’s perceptions of the built environment.
How do we use digital technology for better design?
Current Australian standards and guidelines around lighting in public spaces - are they sufficient?
What factors should be considered in lighting design to make urban environments more equitable and welcoming?
The role of other disciplines in creating a safer environment – human factors, pedestrian planning, acoustics, landscaping
How architects and landscape architects can incorporate the above mentioned factors into their designs
