Francisco Diaz - Make Public: The contradictory nature of architectural publishing | University of Technology Sydney | Thursday, 03. October 2019

UTS School of Architecture 2019 Spring Public Lecture Series
Francisco Diaz
LECTURE TITLE: Make Public: The contradictory nature of architectural publishing
What is the role of publications of architecture? What is their position within architecture? What can these devices be useful for? With a short journey through the history of architecture and a few recent cases (including some experiments made in the context of Ediciones ARQ in Chile), the lecture aims at unpacking the multiple – and sometimes contradictory – nature of architectural publications. Not only do they make architecture public, but they are also a site for public making, whose effects might be different from what their authors expect – including undermining their own authority.
Francisco Díaz is an architect and educator. He holds an MArch from UC Chile and an MSc in Critical, Curatorial & Conceptual Practices from Columbia University GSAPP. He is an associate professor at the School of Architecture at UC Chile and is the Editor-in-Chief of Ediciones ARQ and ARQ Magazine. He has written for magazines such as Volume, San Rocco, Domus, ARQ, Arquine, and Faktur among others. He has lectured in the US, Italy, Spain, Macedonia, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay, and has has edited about 50 books and 13 magazines.
