CARLY FINDLAY | International Day of People with Disability | UNSW Bookshop | Tuesday, 03. December 2019

JOIN US ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY TO SAY HELLO TO CARLY FINDLAY!
Carly Findlay is an acclaimed writer, podcaster and appearance activist. Carly identifies as a proud disabled woman and lives with ichthyosis, a rare and severe skin condition. Much of her work challenges people’s thinking about what it’s like to have a visibly different appearance - whether it be through her celebrated opinion pieces, featuring in ABC TV’s You Can’t Ask That, or organising a history-making Melbourne Fashion Week event featuring disabled models.
This year Carly published her first book Say Hello, which she describes as a “memoir and manifesto on difference, acceptance, self-love and belief”. The book is a blueprint for what Carly terms as ‘defiant representation’ and the need for the disability community to take control of their own story. Carly calls out ableist language, everyday micro-aggressions and the emotional labour expected of people with disability; and uses her story to encourage hope and disability pride.
“I want to show readers how to be proud of their identity and their appearance and love themselves even when the world has told them they have to hide.”
